Sony has announced its new flagship, the Xperia 1 V (pronounced Mark 5) flagship. The design language of this phone is similar to its predecessor, but the internals are upgraded, of course. The phone also has a brand new image sensor that Sony is proud of.

The Sony Xperia 1 V is here with a familiar design

Let’s check out the design first. As you can see, the device includes flat sides all around, with rounded corners. Its top and bottom bezels are thicker than the side bezels, but not thick per se. That allowed Sony not to utilize a display camera hole, and offer you an untainted canvas to work with.

Three cameras sit on the back of the phone. They’re vertically-aligned, and all are part of a camera island placed in the top-left corner. Sony branding is also visible on the back, but barely, on purpose.

It has a side-facing fingerprint scanner, and a brand new main camera sensor

Sony is sticking with a side-facing fingerprint scanner here, and it also utilized a physical camera shutter which is placed lower on the right side of the phone. The volume up and down buttons can be found on the right side too.

Now, regarding that new main camera. Sony is using a 52-megapixel 1/1.35” 2-layer Transistor PIxel stacked CMOS image sensor. It’s an “Exmor T for mobile” sensor, and is about 1.7 times larger than the previous image sensor.

Sony says that this sensor brings approximately double the low light performance compared to the previous model. It also offers high-speed multi-frame overlay procession technology. You’ll be able to shoot a noise-resistant photo with a wider dynamic range that is equivalent to a full-frame camera, according to the company.

A set of compelling ultrawide & telephoto cameras are also included on the back

In addition to that 52-megapixel camera, Sony also included two 12-megapixel units. A 12-megapixel ultrawide camera (f/2.2 aperture, 123-degree FoV, 16mm ultrawide angle), and a 12-megapixel 85-125mm (f/2.3-f/2.8) telephoto camera that offers 3.5-5x optical zoom, and 15.6x hybrid zoom. Do note that Sony also uses ZEISS T* coating on the camera lenses.

As far as the front camera is concerned, Sony opted for a 12-megapixel unit (1/2.9” Exmor RS mobile sensor, f/2.0 aperture, 84-degree wide-angle lens). That’s about it as far as cameras are concerned.

Sony combines a 4K display with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC

The Sony Xperia 1 V includes a 6.5-inch 4K (3840 x 1644) OLED HDR display. This panel offers a 120Hz refresh rate, 240Hz Motion blur reduction, and 240Hz touch scanning rate. It is protected by the Gorilla Glass Victus 2.

The Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC fuels the phone, while Sony included 12GB of LPDDR5X RAM and 256GB of UFS 4.0 flash storage. You can expand its storage via a microSD card, if you want (up to 1TB).

A 5,000mAh battery is included, and the phone supports both wired & wireless charging

Android 13 comes pre-installed on the device, while a 5,000mAh battery sits on the inside. It supports 30W USB PD fast charging, and Qi wireless charging. We’re not sure about the wireless charging speed, though.

There is a nano SIM slot on the inside, and the phone has eSIM support too. It is IPX5/IPX8 rated for water and dust resistance, and IP6X rated for dust resistance. An audio jack is included, and the phone has full-stage stereo speakers. It comes with Dolby Atmos support, and stereo recording. Bluetooth 5.3 is supported, as is 5G connectivity.

The phone measures 165 x 71 x 8.3mm, while it weighs 187 grams. The Sony Xperia 1 V comes in Black, Khaki Green, and Platinum Silver color options. The device is priced at $1,399 / €1,399 / £1299, and it will arrive in the US, the UK, Europe, and more regions starting from June.
