After plenty of leaks and rumors, the OnePlus Open has now gone official. OnePlus announced the device today at an event in Mumbai, alongside OPPO announcing the Find N3 (which is the exact same phone) in Singapore and Paris.
The OnePlus Open is the company’s first foldable, and it’s safe to say, they nailed a lot of the fundamentals here. OnePlus is pretty well-known for putting in over-the-top specs in its smartphones, and the Open is no different. With the Open, we’re looking at a 6.31-inch 20:9 aspect ratio display, with a 7.6-inch main display. Both of which can reach peak brightness of 2,800 nits. Beating the recently announced Pixel 8 series.
Inside, the OnePlus Open comes with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor, 16GB of RAM and 512GB of storage. The important part to note here is that I did not write “up to”. There’s only one RAM/Storage SKU this time around. So everyone buying the Open will get 16GB of RAM and 512GB of storage. There’s no micro SD card slot here, as expected, but 512GB of storage should be plenty for most. OnePlus also put in a pretty large battery, we’re looking at 4,805mAh capacity here.
That’s better specs than most of the other book-style foldables on the market today. Including the Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Pixel Fold, and it’s the same price. Yep, the Open will cost you $1,699 too.
OnePlus didn’t have to go this hard with the cameras
During our briefing in New York City a few weeks ago, OnePlus talked about how foldables usually lacked in the camera department. Most foldables come with an older flagship camera, or something that’s a step down from flagships. Making it a compromise, mostly because they are trying to make these foldables as thin as possible. OnePlus didn’t make that compromise. In fact, these cameras are better than their flagship cameras.
On the OnePlus Open, the company has included a new main sensor – Sony LYT-T808. Which is a pixel stacked sensor. This allows it to double the light of a regular sensor. And thus makes it almost the same as a 1-inch sensor, on some other phones. It’s a 48-megapixel sensor with a f/1.7 aperture. This is a 24mm equivalent lens by default, but you can also choose to make the default 28mm or 35mm.
The Telephoto camera is a new OmniVision OV64B sensor with 3X optical zoom and 6X lossless optical zoom. OnePlus is basically cropping in on the sensor to get a 6X zoom here. While you can get up to 125X digital zoom. This is a 64-megapixel sensor, with a f/2.6 aperture here.
Then there’s the ultrawide. Which is a Sony IMX581 sensor, that’s 48-megapixels with a f/2.2 aperture. On paper, these three cameras look really impressive. And you can check out our OnePlus Open Review for the full details on how well it works in the real world.
When can I buy the OnePlus Open?
The OnePlus Open goes up for pre-orders today, with devices shipping next week – October 26. It’ll cost you $1,699, however no one will actually pay that price.
OnePlus is offering trade-ins up to $1,000 for the Open. However, you can trade in any phone in any condition – including a flip phone from 2001 – and get $200 off. Making this effectively a $1,499 phone. OnePlus is also offering up a Limited Edition version of the OnePlus Buds Pro 2 in a new white colorway, for those that pre-order. There are only 5,000 units available, so these are going to go quickly.
The OnePlus Open will be available from Amazon, BestBuy.com and Oneplus.com in the US. It’ll be the same in Canada, but also available in Best Buy stores. Unfortunately, it is not available from any carrier in the US. But it does work on all carriers – that’s AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon.
Finally, the OnePlus Open comes in Voyager Black and Emerald Dusk. Only the Voyager Black version has a vegan leather backside.
