Ever since its release back in 2021, “Squid Game” has captured the hearts and minds of millions of viewers worldwide, becoming one of Netflix’s most-watched shows of all time. Now, fans of the hit Korean TV show have one more reason to be excited, as Netflix has partnered up with Sandbox VR to develop a virtual reality version of the game.
What to expect from Squid Game VR?
Set to release in late 2023, players will enter the world of Squid Game at any of Sandbox VR’s 30 locations globally, including 26 in North America. The Sandbox VR x Squid Game experience will transport players to various locations from the show and let them compete against each other in “pulse-pounding challenges” inspired by Squid Game. Also, at the end of each game session, players will receive a personalized highlight reel that showcases their in-game reactions and recaps their experience.
Sandbox promises this VR experience will be even more realistic than the TV show itself, as players will be able to roam freely in each room with the company’s advanced motion-tracking technology capturing every movement of their bodies.
The addition of a bHaptic TactSuit to feel physical sensations will provide an experience “not possible with home VR or other location-based VR platforms,” the company claims. Although the company has not shared specific details about the games, users can expect a thrilling experience based on Sandbox VR’s previous games.
Sandbox VR CEO, Steve Zhao, expressed his excitement about the partnership with Netflix, stating, “Our mission is to bring people closer together through world-class immersive experiences. What could be a more perfect fit than ‘Squid Game,’ the most widely shared and discussed television series of the past years? It’s an amazing opportunity to partner with Netflix to provide these fans with the chance to transport themselves into the world of the show.”
