UPDATE: The phone is fueled by the all-new Kirin 9000s processor, Huawei’s brand new chip manufactured by SMIC. That chip comes with the Maleoon 910 GPU. This is a 5nm chip, and Huawei’s first higher-end Kirin processor ever since the US sanctions derailed the company. Check out its details here, and benchmarks here and here.

ORIGINAL ARTICLE: The Huawei Mate 60 Pro has just launched in China with a unique, and odd design. The phone comes with three display camera holes on the front, and it’s the very first phone with such a design.

The Huawei Mate 60 Pro is official with three display holes

Needless to say, that’s odd, and it certainly won’t appeal to everyone. We’re not sure if you can hide those holes via the software, to create a pill-shaped hole. Chances are that an option like that is available, in one shape or the other.

Having said that, the bezels around the display are immensely thin, and they’re seemingly uniform. The display is slightly curved, and all the physical buttons are located on the right-hand side.

The phone has a very compelling camera setup

You will find a ring-shaped camera island on the back, with three cameras inside it. You’ll notice Huawei’s XMAGE branding here, and these cameras do look quite promising. There is a 50-megapixel main camera with variable aperture here, f/1.4-f/4.0. This is a 10-step variable aperture, by the way, and Huawei is the only company that offers that. This camera also has OIS support.

The second camera on the phone is a 12-megapixel ultrawide unit (f/2.2 aperture), while the third one is a super macro telephoto camera (f/3.0 aperture, OIS). That camera supports 3.5x optical zoom, and 100x digital zoom.

On the front, you’ll find a 13-megapixel ultrawide angle camera (f/2.4 aperture), and a 3D depth camera. Yes, this phone does support 3D facial scanning, which is one of the reasons why we have so many cutouts on the front.

The processor is not mentioned in the official spec sheet

What’s interesting is that the processor is not mentioned on the company’s website, not even in the spec section. If we had to guess, we’d say this is the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, but with 4G connectivity. We’ll have to wait and see.

A 6.82-inch 2720 x 1260 OLED display is included here. This is an LTPO display, and its refresh rate goes from 1 to 120Hz. It supports 1,440Hz PWM dimming, and a 300Hz touch sampling rate. Kunlun glass protects it, second-gen Kunlun glass.

The phone offers 12GB of RAM, and users in China can choose between 256GB, 512GB, and 1TB of storage. That storage is also expandable, by the way.

88W wired, and 50W wireless charging is supported here

A 5,000mAh battery can be found on the inside, and the device supports 88W wired, and 50W wireless charging. A charger is included in the box, in case you were wondering. The phone also comes with IP68 certification for water and dust resistance.

HarmonyOS 4.0 comes pre-installed, while satellite calling is also supported here. Bluetooth 5.2 is also on board. The Huawei Mate 60 Pro measures 163.65 x 79 x 8.1mm, while it weighs 225 grams.

There are four color options to choose from

Huawei announced the phone in Baisha Silver, Nannuo Purple, Yachuan Green, and Yadan Black colors. Do note that the names of these color variants have been machine-translated. They are essentially Black, Green, Purple, and Silver-colored phones.

We’re not sure if the Mate 60 Pro will make its way to other markets, but chances are it will, as did its predecessor.
