Apple could ditch pill cutout with iPhone 16 Pro

Believe it or not, there’s a chance Apple will ditch the pill cutout with the iPhone 16 Pro. Based on a new report, from Majin Bu, Apple is testing one such model.

There’s a slight chance Apple will ditch pill cutout with the iPhone 16 Pro

Now, that likely won’t happen, by the way. Ross Young, a well-known display analyst, did say that all four iPhone 16 models will feature a Dynamic Island. That was the case with all four iPhone 15 models too.

That pill cutout on the display is referred to by Apple as ‘Dynamic Island’. The thing is, Apple could keep the same naming, or slightly a changed one, for a regular display camera hole too. Why? Well, it can expand a small UI from that hole too, as it does from a pill-shaped one.

When Ross Young said that the Dynamic Island stays, however, he was referring to a pill-shaped cutout, of course. So, even though Apple has one iPhone 16 Pro prototype with a single display camera hole, chances are it won’t see the light of day.

All iPhone 16 models will likely retain the pill cutout

All iPhone 16 models will likely include a pill cutout. The ‘Pro’ models are tipped to include larger displays. The iPhone 16 Pro is tipped to include a 6.3-inch panel, compared to a 6.1-inch one on the iPhone 15 Pro. The iPhone 16 Pro Max will likely get a 6.9-inch panel, compared to a 6.7-inch one on its predecessor.

We can expect more notable changes with the iPhone 17 series in 2025, though. Last month, Ross Young said that the vanilla models will get a screen size boost too, to match the ‘Pro’ models.

The iPhone 17 Pro series will usher in more of a design change

Furthermore, vanilla models will keep the Dynamic Island even in 2025. The ‘Pro’ models could be in for a change, though. That’s when we may see a display camera hole make its way to the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max.

Apple will basically mode its Face ID tech under the display, and that display hole will be there only for the camera. So, even though Apple is now testing a model with a punch hole, we’ll likely see the change in 2025.

Majin Bu, on the other hand, still believes there’s a chance Apple will change its mind for next year, and end up using a punch hole design. We’ll see.
